One-Day Artist Book Workshop
In this one-day workshop, participants will explore the playful and atmospheric qualities of mono-screenprinting using a natural, wood-inspired colour palette (木顏色). Through layered marks, textures and transparent inks, you will create a series of unique pages — working with repeating patterns, an evolving visual story, or a mix of both.
These pages will then be bound into an 8–10 page Japanese-style artist book using the refined Yotsume Toji (Japanese 4-hole stab binding) technique. Prints can appear both on the surface of the pages and hidden within the folds, creating a playful “hide and seek” storytelling experience as the book is turned.
The finished book becomes a small, intimate object — a portable space for hidden stories, quiet patterns, and the subtle interplay of revealing and concealing.
There is no need to create identical prints. Instead, each page becomes part of an evolving visual language.
Inside the Japanese-bound book, the mono-screenprinted pages form a quiet visual journey of “Hide & Seek.” Working with a soft wood-toned palette (muted browns, warm greys, translucent greens and ochres), participants create layered, atmospheric prints that feel both hidden and revealed. Marks appear and disappear through transparent layers — brushstrokes, wiped textures, ghost impressions and subtle masks — suggesting forms that emerge and recede, like something half-seen in nature or memory.
Participants can choose how they wish to narrate their book: through repeating patterns, an evolving visual story, or a combination of the two. Some pages might lean toward storytelling — a sequence of shifting atmospheres, soft landscapes, or quiet narratives that unfold page by page. Others might explore pattern — repeating rhythms, organic textures and interlocking marks that create a meditative, almost camouflaged surface.
Bound together with the refined Yotsume Toji (Japanese 4-hole stab binding), these 8–10 unique pages become a personal artist notebook. The visible decorative stitching on the spine contrasts gently with the soft, painterly prints inside, creating a dialogue between structure and spontaneity, between what is held and what is concealed.
