Discover the fascinating world of photo lithography, a lithographic printing process that uses light-sensitive materials and photographic imagery to create detailed prints.
Unlike traditional lithography, where an image is drawn directly onto a stone or plate, photolithography allows an image to be transferred onto a printing plate using a light-sensitive emulsion and exposure to light. The exposed image is then processed so that the printing surface accepts ink in the image areas, allowing the design to be transferred onto paper through the printing press.
This technique combines the principles of photography with traditional lithographic printing, making it possible to create highly detailed images, photographs, textures, and graphic compositions.
In this 4-hour introductory class, you’ll be guided through the basic photolithography process, including:
Understanding the principles behind photolithography
Preparing a photographic or digital image for exposure
Transparency will be created for you before the class
Preparing and coating a light-sensitive lithographic plate
Exposing the plate using UV light
Processing the plate and developing the image
Preparing the plate for inking
Inking and printing your image using a professional printing press
Understanding basic registration and edition printing
Photolithography opens up a different way of thinking about printmaking. Because the image can originate from a photograph, digital artwork, drawing, or other source material, the process allows you to combine photographic detail with the physical qualities of fine-art printmaking.
The resulting prints can capture subtle tonal changes, textures, and intricate details that can be difficult to achieve through traditional hand-drawn lithography.

You’ll create your own photolithographic print during the workshop and gain an understanding of the complete process — from preparing your image and exposing the plate to processing, inking, and printing.
At least 3 days before class, send us a JPEG/PNG image in black and white colour. If it is a scan make sure it is 300dpi. Email to us marbleprintclay@gmail.com We will reply if the email is received. If we do not receive your email an image will be provided for you.
