Course Description:

In fall 2022, artist Michelle Fung was the first artist travelling from HK to participate in the Artic Circle, a 17 day residency programme where international artists, filmmakers and musicians lived and worked on-board an Artic-class Tall Ship while sailing the waters of the international territory of Svalbard, an Artic archipelago just 10 degrees latitude from the North Pole.

During the residency, she conducted research for Northlandia, one of the five imaginary countries in her ongoing 2084 world-building project. During the trip, she sketched landscape on site on small woodblocks and weaved Northlandia narrative into the composition and carved over 20 woodblocks on the boat.

Participants will be introduced to her imagined universe and the art of traditional woodcut printmaking. Participants will carve and print their delicate woodcut, inspired by the arctic landscape.

At the end of this workshop, participants will make an edition of 3 prints, and be able to bring home their carved woodblock.

No experiences in woodcut is required.
