2 Day Tintype Instant Photography Workshop with Damon Lam
Tintype was a photographic technique invented in the mid 19th century and was the first true form of “instant” photography. It was the technique of choice for photographers who set up mobile studios at carnivals and other live events because these photos had to be shot, developed and handed to the customer within 15 minutes.
In this workshop, students will explore the art and technique of shooting Tintypes, and see the world rendered in an aesthetic that is unparalleled by any other forms of photography.
Students will bring home at least 2 tintype plates that they have shot and developed themselves.

We will aim for at least 2 tintypes per participant, however this will be contingent on how many total participants we have, as only one camera is available at our disposal.
Each participants should think of things they would like to photograph. It could be still life of objects they bring to the workshop, or places within the vicinity of JCCAC. Portraits are also highly recommended if you can find a partner as your subject!
Some of the chemicals used in the coating/processing of tintype may elicit allergic reaction for certain people and may be toxic if exposed to in high levels. Nitrile gloves will be provided to all participants and a safety briefing will be provided at the start of the workshop.
Class taught in English with Cantonese assistance provided if needed. All materials provided by the studio.
