Photo and Landscape Woodcut 2 day Workshop taught by Jay Lau

No prior experiences is required.


Learn the oldest technique used in fine art printmaking of woodcut in Black & White Landscape Print at a two day workshop.

This workshop will introduce how to use photos to make black and white landscape woodcut prints (mimeographs) related to landscapes. Skills taught include post-processing photos, preparing wood panels, overwriting, engraving and printing.

Participants create woodcut prints based on their own photos, and Jay will provide individual guidance and advice. After completing the two-day workshop, participants will complete an A4 size work with at least 3 prints.

Day 1

  • Demonstrate the skills of black and white woodcut printmaking, introduce the knowledge and techniques of woodcut printmaking, and let the participants try a piece of woodcut printmaking practice (a5 size)
  • Basic retouching skills
  • Use plastic colour transfer photo on woodblock

Day 2

  • Complete a piece of A4 size work with at least 3 editions

What students need to prepare before class:

Participants need to provide an A5 size photo before the class, and the instructor will make a simple post-production. Please email MPC by April 10th 5:00 pm of your file.

About artist:

Jay Lau Ka-chun is studying Master of Fine Arts in the Department of Fine Arts, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received Hong Kong Open Printshop’s “Hong Kong Fine Print” award in 2019. His art practice focuses on printmaking also sculpture, moving images and photography.


木刻工作坊— 照片X木刻風景

參加者根據自攜相片創作木刻版畫,導師提供個別指導和意見。完成兩天的工作坊後,參加者將會完成一幅最少3版次的A4 size作品。

12月 17-18號

- 示範黑白木刻版畫的技巧,介紹木刻版畫畫相關知識及技法,並讓參加者嘗試一張木刻版畫練習(A5 size)
- 基本修圖技巧
- 使用塑膠彩轉印照片於木版上

- 完成一幅最少3版次的A4 size作品

*參加者需要在課堂前提供一張A4 size相片,並由導師作簡單後製



劉家俊,現就讀香港中文大學藝術系藝術碩士,2019年獲香港版畫工作室頒發「Hong Kong Fine Print」獎項。曾從事不同兼職,包括畫班導師、教學助理、技術人員、藝術品搬運佈置員、藝術圈臨時工作者等。現時以版畫作為主要創作媒介,同時亦會創作雕塑、錄像和攝影,當中最喜歡的是錄像作品。

Please note that we have a minimum participant intake in order to run our courses. This course has a minimum intake of 3 people to run. If there are less than 3 participants we may cancel/postpone this course, and we will issue a full refund. Participants will be notified by email if we cancel this course. Please note that refunds take approximately 2 weeks to be processed. We will issue the refund with the same payment method used by the customer.

Student cancellation

Please note we do not offer refunds to student cancellations. We are not responsible for any events/traveling issues students may have that are unrelated to the course. 

If we cancel the course for other reasons

If there is an unavoidable event/issue prohibiting the instructor or the studio to be available that requires us to cancel/postpone the lesson, we will notify students by email by 9:00 pm the day before the class. Full refunds will be issued to all students. Please note that refunds take approximately 2 weeks to be processed.
